Stars-Sharks Postgame Quotes

Here are some quotes following Monday’s Dallas Stars-San Jose Sharks game, which the Stars won 1-0. These quotes are provided by Dallas Stars PR.

Stars Head Coach Lindy Ruff

On tonight’s game:

“I thought we did a lot of good things for a complete sixty minutes.  We put the puck in the right places and played well in our own end as well as through the neutral zone.”

On the play of Kari Lehtonen:

“I thought he played very well.  He found a few pucks through traffic that were big saves for us.  He made the big saves when we needed it.  It was a night where he looked really sharp.”

On the play of the Stars defense:

“Our focus is, in almost every practice, about defending.  I think the execution part of defending and doing the right thing when you have the puck was excellent tonight.  There were times when we had no room and the pucks went in deep, when they had speed and transition we had some people back.  Once they were inside the zone I thought we got some real good blocks.  We had people in lanes.”

On the fourth line scoring the game-winner:

“It’s really been a really big year for [Curtis McKenzie].  Adam [Cracknell] did a real good job of hanging onto the puck.  I thought that line had two or three really good opportunities during the night, but Curtis did a good job of getting to the net and getting a stick on it.”

Stars Goaltender Kari Lehtonen

On the win tonight and if it was a good team win:

“That was something in the last couple of days we have been working on, mainly our defensive side of the game. It was really nice being back there, especially in the first maybe 50 minutes. We did the right things and that was nice, and we got enough opportunities in the other end to score a couple of goals, so that was good.”

On if it felt good to get his second shutout of the season:

“Yeah, they always feel nice. It’s been a tough year so it’s something that, after a game like this, it feels especially good. Just the way we played, the whole 60 minutes, was really cool. Guys were blocking shots and getting to all the rebounds. We were making simple plays and not turning the puck over like we had in the past.”

On if this is the effort they were hoping for after a tough road trip:

“Yeah, it was nice to get back home and everyone is excited to play a home game every once in a while. It was a special night, too, with all of the stuff before the game. That was real nice.”

On if there was a shot in the game that was most difficult tonight:

“I think there were a couple in the second period that kind of got tipped and I barely got something on them. That’s something that, when those hit you, you are having a good night and just have to keep going and have fun.”

On if the opposing goalie also having a good game keeps him playing well:

“No, not really. I just try and learn and see. It’s a new guy there that I haven’t seen play in net much. It was exciting seeing some of the saves he made. Just where I am standing, I am just a little fan there when that happens, but of course hoping we would score a couple more.”

On the goal for this team the rest of the season:

“We just want to work for each other. I know we have lost some players, but some of our guys have gotten opportunities to play more. We’re excited to put this jersey on and come to work and come to battle. It’s no issue to keep at it for 10 more games.”

Stars Forward Curtis McKenzie

On the team effort:

“Yeah, I thought the team played great. You know it’s probably not the most exciting game for a lot of our players, but I thought we were doing the right thing- coming back hard, protecting our slot, and we went forward from there. It was a great game for the team.”

On his goal:

“Great job by Cracks [Adam Cracknell] just holding onto the puck. That’s probably the biggest strength in his game. He must have had it for a good 10 seconds before he shot it at the net and I just found myself open in front, so I was able to get a tip on it.”

On Lehtonen’s performance:

“He’s amazing. A lot of point blank shots, too. Great saves on it. He won the game for us again tonight, so it’s nice having him in there.”

On Lehtonen getting the shutout:

“We didn’t really get him the shutout, he got it himself. I think it’s really awesome for him to get that- he deserves it big time. He works hard everyday, so it’s nice to see him get that shutout.”

On the team’s defensive effort:

“We’ve had some good games and we always seem to win them when we have a good game defensively. So I thought it was a very good game.”

Sharks Head Coach Peter DeBoer

On performance against the Stars:

“Real similar to the last game, we’ve just got to find a way to score a goal. Last game we got one and tonight, one. The chances are there, we’ve got to bear down, we’ve got to get one dirty or ugly around the net, we’ve got to get one on the power play. Some way, somehow, take a little pressure off of the group because it’s hard to win when you’re only getting one or no goals like we’ve gotten in the last couple of games. We’ve got to stick with it, it’s not all bad by any means; there’s a lot of good that’s going on, but right now, we’re cold and we’re paying a price for that.”

On mixing up the lines in second period:

“I think at that point – halfway through the game – we only had ten or 11 shots. I thought we got a little bit of jump after that. We pushed hard the second part of the game, but their goalie was good and we’ve got to do a little bit more around the net to stick one in.”

On Daniel O’Regan’s performance tonight:

“He gave us some good energy. I would’ve liked to play him a little bit more, but the game just didn’t dictate it as it went, but I thought he and Timo Meier did a good job coming in.”

Sharks Captain Joe Pavelski

On confidence in scoring chances:

“The other night we got a lot of qualities looks, I think. Chances where – if you get those looks throughout a night – you’re going to score three and four. Tonight, I don’t think they were as good, probably not as many. I don’t think they had as many; it was a pretty tight game, you look up halfway through the game and the shots are 12 – 9 or something like that. There wasn’t a whole lot of room out there. In a moment like that, the special teams have to take over and generate a little bit more, someone’s got to step up. We had a few looks, just got to find a way to crack it.”

On pressure being put on the power play:

“I think it just makes the [scoring] chance a little bit more important. We’re just still trying to do the same things, but definitely if you can create that momentum off of it, it might break it open for you a little bit. Would’ve been a huge win tonight that’s for sure.”

On three-game losing streak:

“The first game wasn’t us, for whatever reason, we could’ve been better. But that was still a game that was right there for us. Last game was a tough fought game and didn’t go our way, and tonight it’s a 1 – 0 game. We’ve just got to stick with it, keep going, and keep working. These points are important, there’s no time to hang our head. This team never does, we’ve just got to find a way to be a little bit better.”
