Stars-Coyotes Postgame Quotes

Here are some quotes following Tuesday’s Dallas Stars-Arizona Coyotes game, which the Stars won 3-2 in overtime. These quotes are provided by Dallas Stars PR.

Stars Head Coach Lindy Ruff

On the play of the Stars’ younger players:

“I thought the young guys really played well and skated well.  [Jason] Dickinson was in on two or three real good opportunities.  I thought Smitty [Gemel Smith] did a heck of a job in overtime getting up ice and creating a couple of opportunities.  Overall I thought the young guys really skated well.”

On the play of Julius Honka:

“I think he’s getting a little bit more confident to get involved on the offensive side. He’s done a nice job moving the puck. The overtime is a time when he should excel with that much ice and the way he can skate.  I think he feels a little bit more comfortable.”

On the play of Jason Dickinson:

“I talked to him this morning about trying to get to the net and trying to create some opportunities by being around the net more. He’s a big man that skates well by using his size. He created a couple of breaks. Obviously the break came off a turnover when he walked in. I thought physically he had a couple of opportunities. I think he could have had a breakaway off a transition play that bounced off his stick. There was some good stuff in there. He’s been in on some opportunities and had some looks where I thought just a little quicker hands or a little quicker play, but that comes when you start feeling a little more comfortable.”

On the play of Stephen Johns and Jamie Oleksiak:

“Obviously they got scored against early on a coverage goal.  I thought after that they settled down.”

On the status of Curtis McKenzie:

“He won’t play.  He’s doing well and his eye looks good but he just won’t play.  He’s not allowed to exercise during that five day period.  By the time he gets up and exercises again it will be too late to get back in the lineup.  Anytime you see an injury like that there’s concern but we got the indication that everything is going to be good.  We just have to use caution when it comes to getting him back and whether we put him in the lineup or not.”

Stars Defenseman Julius Honka

On his first career goal:

“It feels good. This time being up here I’ve had lots of chances and I’m happy it ended up like this; first goal in overtime.”

On the game winning goal:

“[Gemel Smith] and the forwards did a good job there in the zone and I just wanted to make some movement. I think they [Coyotes] were pretty tired there and I just wanted to shoot the puck and I’m glad it went in.”

On his comfort level during his second call up:

“I feel way more comfortable with the puck and that helps my game. Obviously I like to play with the puck a lot and if you have confidence it helps you to play your game. Overall I feel I’m playing my game a lot better.”

On playing with Dan Hamhuis:

“I think we have a really good connection there. Overall he is a really good player and he knows he’s a vet guy and it helps me out a lot.”

Stars Forward Jason Dickinson

On being productive when up with the Stars:

“I feel comfortable. This team makes me feel comfortable. The guys are real welcoming and the coaches are helping me out a lot. I’m getting a lot of information and each game is just getting a little easier.”

On what he saw on his goal:

“Honestly, I was going to take it backside and pull it to my backhand, but he [Mike Smith] seemed to freeze as I made the little hesitation and the low blocker just opened up for me, so I took it.”

On playing with a lot of AHL teammates tonight:

“Yeah, it’s been a lot of fun. Me and [Justin] Dowling have been playing together a lot this year and it makes it a lot better playing with him up here. We created a lot of chemistry down in Austin and I think we are doing a good job up here together.”

On if he is more comfortable after six games with the Stars:

“I think every game I get the systems down pat a little bit better. We played pretty much the same systems down in Austin, but there are little things that we do different. Every game I get a little bit more comfortable with it and a little bit more where I just find myself in the right areas. It’s no longer thinking about getting to the areas and it is just becoming a habit now.”
